Deliver Birth Justice Campaign
Part of California’s Perinatal Equity Initiative, “Deliver Birth Justice“ is a public awareness campaign bringing attention to persisting health inequities and high mortality rates faced by Black women and birthing people—the results of policies and practices rooted in structural racism.
I partnered with communications agency Change Consulting to create a visual toolkit for this campaign based on their research and messaging framework. We created a bold campaign that puts birth justice front and center in the fight for racial justice, featuring the stories of Black mothers and families.
Mobilizing a region to drive lasting change
Deliver Birth Justice aims to improve maternal and infant health outcomes by building public will for systems change at the local, regional, and statewide level—including increased access to anti-racism training and curriculums for health professionals.
Five Bay Area counties participated in the campaign launch, which featured portraits and stories of Black families in each county.
The campaign received a front-page feature on the San Francisco Chronicle.
Centering power, joy, and possibility
The look and feel for Deliver Birth Justice sought a balance of communicating the gravity of this issue while still leading with positive imagery—highlighting joy, the creation of life, and celebrating Black families and birthing people.
Large, slanting headlines give a sense of urgency, energy, and power. Dark backgrounds give materials a serious tone, with pops of color representing hope and vibrancy amidst challenge.
As part of campaign development, I created moodboards that guided art direction of the final photography—authentic, inclusive, and showing a diversity of Black families and birth justice allies with a range of support systems.
The above are excerpts from the robust toolkit shared with campaign partners in each county. It details the current systemic issues, research and first-hand accounts from Bay Area families, proposed solutions, a messaging framework for various audiences, and visual examples. Partners used this guide to create a microsite, launch video, and social media posts.
